Goodbye Mindfulness, Hello Bodyfulness: The New Presence Practice

Amongst the endless pressures, distractions, and overwhelm that come from everyday life, practices such as mindfulness have become increasingly popular in the wellness world. But have you ever considered that your physical body could benefit from mindfulness too?

Just like our minds, our bodies feel the stress of a busy lifestyle. While we often recognize when our brain is overloaded, stress can also show up physically. Understanding the connection between body and mind can open up a new way to find balance amid the chaos.

From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, we often overlook the toll our schedules take on our bodies. Skipping meals, sitting too long, not drinking enough water, sacrificing sleep — these habits can leave us depleted.

The Body and Mind Are Connected

More research continues to highlight the strong link between body and mind. Our brains don’t carry stress alone; our bodies experience it too. Physical health can reflect mental imbalance, and vice versa.

Our bodies send us warning signs when we’re reaching our limit, but we often ignore them until things become unbearable.

For example, frequent headaches may not just need a pill or more caffeine. It might be your body asking for a break, hydration, or rest.

Pause and reflect — how do you experience stress? Many of us recognize mental symptoms like racing thoughts or overwhelm, but what about the body’s signals?

Common Physical Signs of Stress:

  • Clenching your jaw or teeth

  • Racing heart or stomach butterflies

  • Tightness or heaviness in the chest

  • Fidgeting or bouncing legs

  • Nausea

  • Changes in breathing — rapid or shallow

  • Head, neck, or temple tension

  • Change in voice — more terse or louder

  • Full-body tension, like bracing for something

Often, we don’t notice these signs until it’s too late. But if we learn to tune in, we can respond early — before we hit burnout.

So how can we better listen to our bodies? By practicing something called bodyfulness — bringing awareness, presence, and intention to our physical sensations.

What is Bodyfulness?

Bodyfulness is a practice that complements mindfulness. It involves slowing down, tuning inward, and focusing on how your body feels in the present moment. Regular practice helps build the habit of noticing physical cues and responding to your body’s needs.

Bodyfulness Practices to Get Started

  • Do a body scan before getting out of bed. Spend a few minutes noticing sensations from head to toe — any soreness, tightness, or tension.

Pro Tip: Use touch to soothe problem areas — massage your scalp, rub your forehead, or hug your knees while lying on your back.

  • Notice your stress signals. Keep a notepad nearby to jot down physical stress reactions. This will help you recognize signs before stress escalates.

Pro Tip: When you sense stress building, take a calming supplement or break. Even 5 minutes of pause can make a big difference.

  • Incorporate gentle movement. Instead of long workouts, try short bursts of movement like stretches, chair yoga, or shaking out limbs.

Pro Tip: Take frequent movement breaks to refresh your body and mind.

  • Use your CBD routine as a body check-in. Before taking CBD, ask yourself how you feel physically. Take one small step to care for yourself.

Pro Tip: Set phone reminders to check in and take your CBD — they can become moments of calm throughout your day.

  • Make bodyfulness part of your bedtime. Try evening stretches or breathing exercises to prepare for sleep.

Pro Tip: A calming CBD gummy can enhance this routine — take it 30–60 minutes before bed while doing a gentle wind-down practice.

  • Say “Thank you” to your body. It supports you daily, so take time to show appreciation.

Pro Tip: Express gratitude when applying lotion, showering, or getting dressed. Even small affirmations can build a positive connection with your body.
